ArE yOu SaGgInG yOuR jEaNs? Go To JaiL fOr It!

Sagging Jeans, a style popularized in the early 1990’s began in prisons and jails across the country, where oversized uniforms were issued without belts to prevent suicides and their use as weapons. The style spread through the hip-hop culture, rappers music videos, and the ghetto to the suburbs and around the world. Sagging jeans are becoming a criminal offense in a growing number of communities like Delcambre, Louisiana, a town of 2,231 that is 80 miles southwest of Baton Rouge. The style carries a fine of as much as $500 or up to a six-month jail sentence.

An ordinance in Mansfield, a town of 5,496 near Shreveport, Louisiana subjects offenders to a fine as much as $150 plus court costs or jail time up to 15 days. Police Chief Don English said “The law, takes effect Sept. 15, 2008, and will set a good civic image.”

I think this is ridiculous, free America should be able to express themselves to any extent unless it’s indecent exposure. Sagging is a way of style and swagger, not a federal offense!! Don’t get me wrong, yes sagging to a certain extent is going too far, but as far as sending citizens to jail for their jeans being too low is sad. Unless one saggs to a point that their jeans are to their knees or indecently exposing their bare ass, then the Police and or authorities have no right to take someone to jail or to fine them, period.
Fashion? Style? Swagger? or a Federal Crime?
