COLD and a 1.3 meter-per-second headwind in BRUSSELS, Belgium didn’t stop Usain “Lightning” Bolt from striking 1st place once again. Asafa Powell was first out of the blocks, but Bolt was forced to come from behind to beat Powell in 9.77 seconds Friday, in the 100-meters at the Van Damme Memorial.

In his last race of the season, Bolt saw his Jamaican teammate Powell shoot ahead of him out of the blocks, but he wasn’t going to let him spoil his farewell party in Europe. Halfway through the race Bolt caught up to Powell and his long 6′5” stride took over the race, finishing just .08 seconds off the world record he set at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Powell, the only sprinter to beat Bolt this season finished 2nd in 9.83 seconds, and Nesha Carter made it a Jamaican sweep in 10.07 seconds.

“Asafa is a really fast guy. I’m getting used to chasing him,” Bolt said.

“I came out to run fast,” Powell said. “Usain really put on the pressure.”
